Sales Tax Calculator
Calculate sales tax forward from a price, or backward from a total that already includes it, using any state's 2026 base rate or your own custom rate.
Most states also add county/city rates on top.
Pre-tax price
$100.00
Sales tax (7.25%)
$7.25
Total
$107.25
How it's calculated
Forward (price known, tax added):
total = price × (1 + rate)
Reverse (total known, tax already included, back out the price):
price = total ÷ (1 + rate)
Worked examples
| $100.00 price at California's 7.25% base rate → tax | $7.25 |
| Same purchase → total | $107.25 |
| $107.25 total (tax included) at 7.25% → pre-tax price | $100.00 |
| Tax backed out of that total | $7.25 |

Frequently Asked Questions
Does this include city or county sales tax?
No -- this calculator uses each state's base rate only. Most states also allow counties, cities and special districts to add their own sales tax on top, so your real total at the register can run higher than the state rate shown here, sometimes by several points. Check your specific city or county for the combined rate.
Which states have no state sales tax?
Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon have no state-level sales tax as of 2026. Alaska still allows local sales taxes even without a state rate, so a purchase there can still carry tax depending on the city.
How does the reverse calculation work?
If you know the final price someone paid (tax already included) but need the pre-tax price -- for bookkeeping, an expense report, or checking a receipt -- switch to "Total → price" and enter the total. The calculator divides by (1 + rate) to back out the original price, rather than just subtracting a percentage of the total, which would overstate the tax.
Which states have the highest sales tax rates?
Among state-level base rates, California (7.25%), Indiana (7%), Mississippi (7%), Rhode Island (7%), Tennessee (7%) are the highest for 2026. Several of these states also allow substantial local add-ons, so their combined rates at the register are often higher still.
